You ask good questions and I wonder if it isn't a little of both! I do know that people with schizophrenia for example can be extraordinarily strong. No matter where my spiritual journey has taken me, I never forgot that the Devil relies on us NOT believing in him to have power. And that scares me a lot, given how "rational" most people are these days.
