Helen takes a Fall

(for Helen, who I worked with years ago, and who told me about falling off a truck when she met her husband)

In the still of this November, Helen takes a fall

from truck into love.

She does not go there neatly, or carefully.

She tumbles into love, the way some people fall off of an apple cart.

The way Jack of Jack and Jill rolled down the hill.

The way people trip and fall and get their legs all caught up and jumbled.

No Helen’s trip was big.

And her love was too.
