Cottage

I see you in a dream

Sometimes I do see you, grandma who I never really knew.

You are sane now, and peaceful, almost floating in your small cottage in heaven.

My mama lives next door, with her sister.

You all gather for tea in the afternoon, though you just pretend it’s the afternoon, because after all,

It is all forever and there is no time.

How beautiful you look with your white hair and pink skin.

My mother laughs and teases my aunt.

Each of you has a cat we used to know in your lap.

And our small white poodle Maggie and large black poodle Chrissy sleep by the fire.

Of course there is a fireplace. And beautiful flowered chintz sofas.

To see you like this, even for a moment, is a blessing, a gift.

I don’t want to wake up.
